Good morning everyone. Today we are headed to the Hawkeye State. The oldest geocache in Iowa is 'Observatory Cache' - GCC0. Hidden in November, 2000, it was found just once before going missing. There is no official log saying it's been archived, but it was archived in 2008. The oldest active geocache is 'Maltese Goldfinch (Re-resurrected) - GC162. Hidden in January, 2001, this cache has been found 920 times and has 384 favorite points. The most favorite geocache in Iowa is '49 AND HOLDING THE CACHE A GOLD MINER'S DELIGHT' - GC202RG. Hidden in October, 2009, this geocache has been found 1,189 times and has received 585 favorite points.
Before I open the latest cache crate, there's one thing that I need to follow up on from last week. One of the pictures from last week's Spooky Caches blog was a glass skull. I couldn't remember the GC code and I didn't want to spend a great deal of time going through my found caches since I don't recall exactly when I found either of them. Good friend and fellow geocacher Stonagal was able to provide the GC codes to both.
The one pictured is GC2RVFB - 'DAN AKROYD'S BRAIN'. I found this one in September, 2016 and it was archived in September, 2019. The first glass skull I found was GC4E51R - 'DAN AKROYD - BRIDGE OUT'. I found that one in October, 2014 (very early into my daily streak, day #106 in fact). That cache was archived in September, 2017. I believe I have a picture of that one too somewhere.
Another thing I did hint at, at the end of last week's blog was possibly talking about an Adventure Lab I recently did. That's been delayed until next week as something came in the mail the other day. The October Cache Crate. These things usually have a theme each month. I wonder if this one will have spooky theme. Let's open it and find out.
The first item out is a geocaching journal. If you want to keep a better record of the caches you've found and have a quick reference should another geocacher turn to you as the PAF, then this book would be very handy.
As you can see, you can record the date, if you found it, D/T rating, coordinates, hint, and more. I've never kept a physical journal like this.
Next out is a golf ball container. I'm sure we all have found at least one of these in our geocaching travels, along with many real golf balls. I did have an idea for this golf ball. Get an ammo can and fill it with real golf balls. Include the fake golf ball. You would have to sort through all the real golf balls to find the one with the log sheet. That's so evil. I just might do that.
A pirate trackable is next. I have to go through all the trackables I've recieved this year and activate them. Winter project.
The last item out of the box is a face mask. This one actually fits my big head. I got one in an earlier cache crate that has the geocaching logo on it. That one was too small, so I've never worn it.
That concludes the monthly cache crates for now. I have suspended my subscription so I can redirect that money elsewhere. I have enjoyed receiving the crates each month. Until next week where I will talk about one of the Adventure Labs I did recently, be happy, stay safe, wear a mask, wash/sanitize your hands, hug a loved one if you can, but most of all, have fun. Peace out.
Sassy and Tinkers love playing with new boxes.
