Good morning everyone. For the past sixty-four weeks, I have been showcasing the oldest and most favorite geocache in every State, Province, District, and Territory. Wouldn't that have been awesome, spending a week geocaching in each location? This week I look back at that fictional journey and all those oldest in each area with some interesting comparisons.
We all know that Mingo is the oldest active geocache in the world. Sticking with our tour, there are three other States with old caches placed in May, 2000. Oregon (may 12), Illinois (may 13) and New York (may 26). Every month from May, 2000 to June 2001 has at least one oldest cache, except August. I'm also not including Canada's oldest just yet. The bulk of the oldest per State caches can be found in the months of May, June, September, October and December, 2000. January, February, and March, 2001. Each has a minimum of four oldest caches.
The youngest of the oldest cache per State is in the District of Columbia. Capital View GCDE1 was placed June 27, 2001. The next youngest is in Wyoming. Bridge-Teton Cache, GCD7E was hidden June 18, 2001.
The most found cache among the oldest per State is.... (how many of you are placing money on Mingo?). The most found has 10,347 finds when I last checked. The second most found oldie has 8,602 found logs. The third most found is in Maine. The Fort Williams Cache has 4,168 found logs. Now that I have dragged this out for a bit, the most found oldest cache is Capital View in Washington DC. Yes, the youngest oldie is the most found. It's a virtual outside of the Whitehouse. Easier to get to compared to second place Mingo.
Since I'm talking about found logs on the oldest per State, forty of the oldies have over one thousand finds. Eleven have fewer than one thousand finds. Of those eleven, only Iowa (GC162) and Minnesota (GC9FF) are within twenty five finds of 1,000. The least found are Alaska (GC68) with 122, Wyoming (the second youngest of the oldies) with 146, and South Dakota (GC87E) with 169.
Overall, the oldest active cache in each State has a total of 107,476 found logs or an average of 2,107 logs each. South Dakota (GC87E) has the highest D/T rating at 4/4.5. Coincidentally, Wyoming (GCD7E) has the next highest D/T rating with a 4/3. They are both among the fewest found caches. A total of 35,424 favorite points have been given to these oldest caches. An average of 694 points per. That's about a third of the total finds that give favorite points.
Looking at Canada's oldest cache per Province, Nova Scotia is the home to the oldest cache. GCBBA was placed on June 28, 2000. The next oldest is in Alberta. GCA6 was placed on November 4, 2000. The youngest is in Nunavut Territory. GC5803 was hidden on May 5, 2002. This is also the youngest of both countries and the only old cache placed in 2002.
The most found is the one in Nova Scotia with 2,772 finds so far, followed by British Columbia (GC1DD) with 1,711 finds. The oldest cache with the fewest finds is in Quebec (GCBB). Placed on July 13, 2001, it has only been found 189 times. If we include the Northern Territories, the least found is in Northwest Territories. Yankee/Doctor Bay GC1280 has only been found twice and hasn't been found since 2006. The cache page does say it was found 3 times and I did point this out when I mentioned this a few weeks ago. The third person to find it claimed to do so on May 23, 2019. The day before on the 22nd, they claim to have found caches in Wyoming, Colorado, and Texas (a distance of over 1,000km), grabbed a flight from Texas to Northwest Territories, got on a float plane to get closer and paddled to ground zero (a day and a half of paddling according to one of the logs). All that within a 48 hour time period. Looks suspicious to me. Arm chaired logging.
Getting back to our epic trip. The oldest active Canadian caches have a total of 9,424 finds for an average of 724 per.
Sixty four oldest caches per area. How many have you found in real life? I have two. Maybe you'll find one of these oldies and enter the photo contest. Next week I announce the winner of the August photo contest. Don't delay, send your entry today to thegeocachingguild@gmail.com.
That's it for this week. Until next time, be happy, stay safe, wash your hands and wear a mask, hug your pets, and most importantly, just have fun. Peace out ✌
That's me with Manitoba's oldest active geocache. GC21C.
